Embercombe offers a Natural Beekeeping course, which is suitable for beginners and those unfamiliar with natural beekeeping practises. Whatever your level of experience this course will give you the confidence to build and manage your own top-bar hive following the principles of natural beekeeping.

At Embercombe the bees are cared for using a natural approach which puts the bees and their needs first ensuring the whole lifecycle of the colony and their wellbeing is our priority. Our aim is to support the bees back to healthy resilience whilst inquiring into good practice regardless of the type of hive the bees are kept in.

Having bees on the land is a blessing in itself as well as providing us with pollination, wax, propolis and, of course, some honey. The interest in the bees is universal and offers a clear gateway into connection with nature and our relationship with the natural environment.

Our journey with bees is not simply a practical one but also one that enable deeper inquiry into ourselves and our impact on the world. These aspects are reflected in the bee courses we offer.

On the Natural Beekeeping course you will learn:

  • The nature of bees and the evolution of beekeeping
  • The principles of natural beekeeping
  • How to build a top bar hive for yourself using simple tools
  • The basics of managing a hive during your first year of beekeeping
  • How to learn about bees by observing their behaviour

When you see for yourself how bees design and build their own nest, you will realise how little they need from us as beekeepers, and how much we can learn from them.

This course is suitable for beginners and those unfamiliar with natural beekeeping practises. Whatever your level of experience this course will give you the confidence to build and manage your own top-bar hive following the principles of natural beekeeping.

There is the option to take away, in kit form, all the materials cut to size, for you to build your own top bar hive (this will have a separate cost of £195). Please inform us before the course if you would like a hive so we can prepare the wood.
